RV & Camping News

News from around the campfire.

– A 35-year-old travel trailer yielded up some secrets to its new owners. In a small black box, hidden away inside the trailer, were military medals belonging to a man dead since 2001. Evidently, Dr. Edwin Harrison, the sixth president of Georgia Tech, hid the medals inside sometime before his death. After the trailer changed hands, new owners found the box and went on a “treasure hunt” to find the owner. They recently turned over the box and its contents to Harrison’s son in Cobb County, Georgia.

– Authorities tell WKBN a Youngstown man has died after being burned by a fire that was sparked by a space heater at Green Acres Lake Park in Diamond, Ohio.

– To help out Canadian farmers in tight times, some local and federal laws encourage “agri-tourism,” wherein farmers can allow folks to camp on their property and get a sense of living on the land. But the mayor of Kelowna, British Columbia, says he figures at least half the “farmers” in his area are frauds, operating what he calls “year around trailer courts.”

– For the ninth consecutive year, Camping World RV Sales was announced as America’s No. 1 seller of tow-able and motorized RVs for 2013 by Statistical Surveys. Camping World RV dealerships amassed 47 individual dealer awards for being the top-in-class in their respective states. Due to having the largest amount of sales locations.

– BOGO (buy one, get one) offers abound, and Kentucky State Parks are joining in. Buy one night of camping in April or May, get the second night free, Sunday through Thursday. Use the promo code “SPRING14” on the state parks’ Internet reservation system.

~News From The Weird~

– Make my day? A campground manager in West, Texas, had his own Clint Eastwood moment when he found three folks who appeared to be planning to steal LP cylinders from rigs in his campground. The manager brandished a shotgun and ultimately discharged it, hitting one. Not too bright to argue with an armed man — but it figures — one of the would-be burglars was named Looney.

BANTAM, Conn. :  A man charged for accidentally setting a camper ablaze while horsing around with friends led state police right to his stash of marijuana plants, according to Register Citizen.  A state trooper investigating a trailer fire at the home of 18-year-old Christopher Jacquier and his mother, discovered several potted marijuana plants. Register Citizen explains 13 plants, or nearly a pound of marijuana, were seized from the property, along with rolling papers, a small baggy of marijuana, an electronic scale, a pipe with burnt residue and a water bong.  Jacquier told authorities investigating a fire he accidentally set a trailer ablaze while burning scrap wood. He told authorities he asked his mother for permission to burn the trailer, but she wouldn’t let him, Register Citizen reports.

–  A man was jailed Monday after he led police on a wild chase through Placer County, Fla. that ended with several trailers damaged, according to KCRA.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Department told KCRA the man downed a large number of prescription pills in a suicide attempt, then drove off. The man was drinking beers as deputies followed him.  The chase ended in an RV park in Colfax. The driver smashed into several trailers, causing significant damage, KCRA reports.

Unique ways to S’more

Nothing says camping like roasting marshmallows over a campfire to create the perfect s’more. A traditional s’more recipe calls for sandwiching a roasted marshmallow between graham crackers with a couple of pieces of chocolate. But there is no “right way” to make a s’more. In fact, there are endless combinations and creative ingredients that can be used to create unique and fun treats. So the next time you’re camping in your RV, check out these recipes for a fresh spin on an old classic.

The S’more Dip

Ingredients
– Chocolate cream cheese

– Marshmallow cream

– Chocolate chips

– Miniature marshmallows

– Aluminum foil

– Parchment paper

Directions: Tear off a large square aluminum foil. Add a square of parchment inside the aluminum foil. Place scoops of chocolate cream cheese and a dollop of marshmallow creme in center on top of parchment paper. Wrap up and place on campfire for 15-20 minutes, until melted. Use tongs to remove packet from heat. Sprinkle miniature marshmallows and chocolate chips on top. Serve with graham crackers of course!

The S’more Cone

Ingredients

– Waffle ice cream cone

– Chocolate chips

– Miniature marshmallows

– Chopped fruit (bananas, strawberries, etc)

– Aluminum foil

Directions: Mix miniature marshmallows, chocolate chips and chopped fruit in a cone. Wrap cone in foil. Lay wrapped cones over your campfire for 5-7 minutes; rotating occasionally. Use tongs to remove cone from heat. When the foil is cool enough to hold, unwrap cone and enjoy.

The S’more Burrito

Ingredients

– Chocolate chips

– Miniature marshmallows

– Peanut butter (optional)

– Flour tortillas

– Aluminum foil

Directions: Spoon two tablespoons of chocolate chips or pieces, a dozen miniature marshmallows and peanut butter (optional) into the center of a flour tortilla. Roll up the tortilla, wrap it in foil, and set it on campfire coals for about 4 minutes, flipping it halfway through. Use tongs to remove the burrito from heat. When the foil is cool enough to hold, fold it down on one end and eat this sweet burrito treat.

S’more Golden Graham Treats

Ingredients

-1/4 cup butter
-1 (10 oz) bag regular marshmallows
-1 box of Golden Graham cereal
-1-2 cups Chocolate chips

Directions: Combine marshmallow and butter in a large microwave safe bowl. Microwave for approximately 1 minute. Stir mixture together until combined, microwaving in 30 second intervals until completely melted. Add Golden Grahams to bowl and stir until they are all well coated. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour mixture into a greased 9×13 pan and press evenly. Let cool at least 15 minutes before cutting into squares and going to town!

The Banana S’more

Ingredients

– Bananas
– Chocolate chips
– Miniature marshmallows
– Graham crackers

– Aluminum foil

Directions: Slice banana lengthwise and slightly open. Place on a square of aluminum foil. Insert marshmallows and chocolate chips into the sliced banana. Wrap each banana up in foil and cook on the grill for 5 to 10 minutes. Use tongs to remove the banana from heat. When the foil is cool enough to hold, unwrap the bananas and top with a few tablespoons of crushed graham crackers. After the banana s’more has slightly cooled grab a spoon and dig in.

Any ways to eat s’mores that we missed? Let us know in the comments. We’re always looking for new, delicious ways to get our favorite camping dessert!

2013 Hershey RV Show

America’s Largest RV Show ~ Hershey, Pennsylvania

Hershey RV Show - America's Largest RV Show

Hershey RV Show – America’s Largest RV Show

The Hershey Show, officially known as America’s Largest RV Show by the sponsoring Pennsylvania RV & Camping Association (PRVCA), has become the kickoff venue for the RV industry to unveil its new model year lines on a national scale to both a trade and consumer audience. And this year’s event – set for Sept 9-15 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. – should go a long way toward reinforcing that reputation.

“The show is doing as good as it’s ever done in the sense of we’re virtually sold out for vendor space inside and we created more area outside,” reports Show Chairman Dan Saltzgiver, general manager for Camping World of Hanover (Pa.). “And then there’s the manufacturers’ space, which was all but sold out at the show drawing going back to the first week of May. Since then, what little space we had, Becky (Lenington, PRVCA executive director) pretty much has it all sold. She actually converted one area that we haven’t used in the manufacturers’ space to try to accommodate some more manufacturers.”

The good news, in a nutshell, from PRVCA:

• Through the end of July, the Hershey Show’s sold space totaled 817,120 net square feet versus 745,127 net square feet in 2012.

• The show’s total square footage as of mid-July: 1.54 million gross square feet.

• Outdoor manufacturer space is up 18% for this year’s show and the number of displays has increased by about 50 booths.

• The sold-out Giant Center is scheduled to house 238 booths. “Inside the Giant Center, the arena downstairs is sold out and then there is the upstairs mezzanine, Saltzgiver told Woodall’s Campground Management. “We are sold out all around there for retail days for sure. And we’re working to get it sold for wholesale days as well. We sell some of that space twice. If someone is only coming for retail, then we resell it for wholesale.”

Attendance Goal

PRVCA, in turn, wants to top 2012’s record-breaking, public day attendance of 43,131, a 29% uptick from 2011. And it wants to surpass the 2,022 attendees registered on last year’s trade days, a 12.77% from 2011. “Even though it doesn’t appear that way, we’ve been increasing the wholesale number of dealers each year,” said Saltzgiver. “So, while that’s not the size yet that we’d like to see it, we’re being told by the manufacturers that it’s still important to them.”

That said, PRVCA won’t be attempting to return the show’s square footage to its all-time, pre-recessionary high because the association has decided not to try to expand beyond the eastside foot bridge to the adjacent Giant Center parking lots, a configuration that just didn’t seem to work for everybody. “I don’t know if we’ll ever get over that (modern high point) as long as the show committee agrees with me that we shouldn’t go across the road again,” said Saltzgiver.

“That just created a lot of problems for the manufacturers on that side, as well as customers going over to that side,” added Saltzgiver. “It’s one of the things on which we made a decision as a group. Things could change. But now we’re deciding not to use that side so that it’s better for our retail customer coming in as well as the manufacturers and suppliers that exhibit at that show.”

Green clean your RV Pennsylvania!

When you’re an  avid RVer, it is easy to have a green perspective when it comes to our planet. After all, an RV gets you out into nature, taking you to places where you experience sunshine, fresh air, and beautiful scenery. Your Lerch RV allows you to explore the best of what our great country has to offer from comfortable surroundings. What is better than that?

An easy way to be Eco-conscious when you are experiencing the RV lifestyle is to go green when you clean. Here are five green cleaning tips that you can take on the road or even use at home if you desire to:

  1. Make your own: Cleaning green doesn’t have to cost a lot of green. There are many green products out there on the market but an easier and cheaper approach is to make your own cleaning solutions. All you need is good ole’ water, white vinegar, and baking soda. Between the three you can clean almost anything in your RV.
  2. Reduce and reuse: Think smart when you recycle. Instead of throwing out spray bottles when you’re out of cleaning solution, rinse them out and use them again! Reuse plastic baggies, plastic food containers, water bottles, and aluminum foil. Recycle when you can, but reusing is even greener!
  3. There’s nothing baking soda can’t do: Beyond being made into a cleaning solution, baking soda has tons of other uses around your RV (and your home). Sprinkle a little on your carpet or upholstery before vacuuming for a fresh scent, keep in your RV fridge as a deodorizer, and sprinkle into garbage cans to keep odors at bay.
  4. Air freshener:  No need to add chemicals to your RV to give it that fresh smell.  In a 16-oz spray bottle, combine: 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of fabric softener (use a natural/organic softener) and 6 to 10 drops of vanilla or almond extract. Fill the remainder of the bottle with water and you’ve got your own, green air freshener.
  5. Stains are out: Stains on vinyl are no match for a little lemon juice and elbow grease.  Use straight lemon juice to rub out any stains on your RV’s vinyl flooring.

It might require a wee bit more time to use some of the above ideas, and it might seem easier just to grab that bottle of cleaner. In the long run you will be doing yourself and the environment a favor.

Safe Travels and Happy RVing!

Take advantage of your RV Pennsylvania!

Recreational Vehicles take camping to the next level, they’re loaded with amenities that make camping an incredible experience. Although some have more features than others.  Here are three easy ways to make sure you’re getting the most out of your Lerch RV when you’re on the road.

1.  You have a kitchen so cook a feast!

Go gourmet in your RV. When you have tons of cabinetry for storing ingredients, a spacious refrigerator, and 3-burner stove, you’re set to cook like a chef. Have hotdogs and burgers one night, but plan a night where you break out the spices, the premier cuts of meat, the vino, and a homemade dessert. There are tons of RV cooking resources that can help you find RV-friendly gourmet recipes.

2.  There’s tons of sleeping space, so bring your friends. You have room!

In an RV, there’s way more sleeping space than you might ever use. Some of our current inventory floor plans sleep up to twelve campers. Why waste the space, the more the merrier. Grab your friends (or your kids’ friends) and bring them along. Memories are made when you get big groups together. Why do you think so many families try to go camping together?

3.  Make the most of entertainment systems.

Whether your RV has flat screen TVs inside, outdoor TVs, or both, you get the best of both worlds. Roughing it, while being able to laugh along with your favorite movie or TV show. Don’t feel guilty using (and loving) your TVs. Invite the neighbors (campers in the spots nearby) over for movie night or put the game on the outside TV.

Have any gourmet RV recipes, stories of packed RVs, and favorite RV movies? Share with us in the comments. Especially if you love RVing as much as we do!
