2013 Hershey RV Show

America’s Largest RV Show ~ Hershey, Pennsylvania

Hershey RV Show - America's Largest RV Show

Hershey RV Show – America’s Largest RV Show

The Hershey Show, officially known as America’s Largest RV Show by the sponsoring Pennsylvania RV & Camping Association (PRVCA), has become the kickoff venue for the RV industry to unveil its new model year lines on a national scale to both a trade and consumer audience. And this year’s event – set for Sept 9-15 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. – should go a long way toward reinforcing that reputation.

“The show is doing as good as it’s ever done in the sense of we’re virtually sold out for vendor space inside and we created more area outside,” reports Show Chairman Dan Saltzgiver, general manager for Camping World of Hanover (Pa.). “And then there’s the manufacturers’ space, which was all but sold out at the show drawing going back to the first week of May. Since then, what little space we had, Becky (Lenington, PRVCA executive director) pretty much has it all sold. She actually converted one area that we haven’t used in the manufacturers’ space to try to accommodate some more manufacturers.”

The good news, in a nutshell, from PRVCA:

• Through the end of July, the Hershey Show’s sold space totaled 817,120 net square feet versus 745,127 net square feet in 2012.

• The show’s total square footage as of mid-July: 1.54 million gross square feet.

• Outdoor manufacturer space is up 18% for this year’s show and the number of displays has increased by about 50 booths.

• The sold-out Giant Center is scheduled to house 238 booths. “Inside the Giant Center, the arena downstairs is sold out and then there is the upstairs mezzanine, Saltzgiver told Woodall’s Campground Management. “We are sold out all around there for retail days for sure. And we’re working to get it sold for wholesale days as well. We sell some of that space twice. If someone is only coming for retail, then we resell it for wholesale.”

Attendance Goal

PRVCA, in turn, wants to top 2012’s record-breaking, public day attendance of 43,131, a 29% uptick from 2011. And it wants to surpass the 2,022 attendees registered on last year’s trade days, a 12.77% from 2011. “Even though it doesn’t appear that way, we’ve been increasing the wholesale number of dealers each year,” said Saltzgiver. “So, while that’s not the size yet that we’d like to see it, we’re being told by the manufacturers that it’s still important to them.”

That said, PRVCA won’t be attempting to return the show’s square footage to its all-time, pre-recessionary high because the association has decided not to try to expand beyond the eastside foot bridge to the adjacent Giant Center parking lots, a configuration that just didn’t seem to work for everybody. “I don’t know if we’ll ever get over that (modern high point) as long as the show committee agrees with me that we shouldn’t go across the road again,” said Saltzgiver.

“That just created a lot of problems for the manufacturers on that side, as well as customers going over to that side,” added Saltzgiver. “It’s one of the things on which we made a decision as a group. Things could change. But now we’re deciding not to use that side so that it’s better for our retail customer coming in as well as the manufacturers and suppliers that exhibit at that show.”

10 Best RV Parks in North America

The RV season is underway and for those that are just starting out, and even those who have been at it for years, finding the perfect destination can be challenging. For most people, the ultimate goal of a camping trip or vacation is to “get away” from the world and relax as a family. To help you find the perfect spot, we found a list of the “The 10 Best RV Parks in North America” as compiled by Rates to Go.

“The 10 Best RV Parks in North America”:

10. Madison Arm Resort, Montana

Located in West Yellowstone, Montana, Madison Arm Resort is a mere 8 miles outside of Yellowstone National Park, making it easily accessible for visitors who don’t wish to camp or stay within the park’s sometimes crowded borders. Be sure to stroll by Lake Hegben for fishing, swimming, and site seeing in between trips to the national park itself!

9. Squaw Flat Campground, Utah

Tucked in the Needles section of Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah you’ll find the incredible Squaw Flat Campground. The park is known for its beautiful stone pillars, rock formations, and Indian rock paintings. RV travelers will enjoy the scenic landscape as they drive along US 191 on their way into the park, while hikers will find the three-mile hike to Chesler Park an incredible experience.

8. Boyd’s Key West Campground, Florida

A trip to Florida does not automatically translate to a stuffy hotel stay. Key West gives visitors access to dozens of major attractions while Boyd’s Key West Campground provides saltwater fishing, a boat dock, and a fun Tiki Hut experience for every RVer staying in one of its waterfront campsites. Don’t forget to visit Duval Street for the sunset celebration in Mallory Square each evening!

7. Mt. Desert Narrows Camping Resort, Maine

Mt. Desert Narrows Camping Resort, found in Bar Harbor, Maine, is known as the only national park in New England. The Mt. Desert Narrows or Narrows Too sections provide excellent sites for those seeking an ocean view, while the Patten Pond area of the park gives visitors access to the 740-acre lake. Canoeing, hiking, biking, and whale watching are only a few of the activities available to visitors in Bar Harbor!

6. Horsethief Lake Campground, South Dakota

At the base of Mt. Rushmore you’ll find Black Hills National Forrest and the Horsethief Lake Campground. Fishing and horseback riding are popular daytime activities, while you may choose to start the evening with a view of the mountain from the lighting ceremony. Be sure to head on over to the Crazy Horse Memorial. Believe it or not, the memorial is larger than all four heads of the Mt. Rushmore carvings combined!

5. Rivers Edge RV Park, Alaska

Traveling to Alaska via a well-stocked RV might prove to be one of the most cost-effective ways to visit the lonely state. Rivers Edge RV Park is located in Fairbanks, Alaska and is full of historic sites such as gold mining towns and Indian Villages. It’s the perfect stop for visitors who find themselves on their way to the famous Alaska Highway!

4. Orchard (Huerta Saucedo) Vacation Village, Mexico

You don’t need to stay in an all-inclusive resort to experience the beauty and culture in Mexico. Mulege, Mexico is the home of the Orchard Vacation Village (also known as Huerta Saucedo). If you’re looking for something different you might try your hand at clamming, while those interested in history will enjoy cave tours or trips into Mulege to see the old penitentiary. If all else fails, you won’t regret time spent in the sun on the white sandy beaches!

3. Tunnel Mountain Campground, Canada

RV trips need not be limited to the summer months. Located in Banff National Park in Canada you’ll find Tunnel Mountain Campground. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Canadian Rockies in between ski or snowmobile trips. Those who prefer a little more control will enjoy hiking, biking, or visits to the nearest hot spring!

2. Yosemite Pines RV Park, California

In Groveland, California lies Yosemite Pines RV Park. Open year round, the park offers a variety of truly unique experiences. Hike, pan for gold, or take a chartered plain tour over the scenic park for a bird’s eye view of Gold Country! This campground is an excellent option for travelers who don’t want to stay within Yosemite Park itself.

1. Rocky Knob Campground, Virginia

Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, near mile marker 167, you’ll find Rocky Knob Campground. View some of the most incredible mountain ridges on the eastern coast of the United States while enjoying dozens of historic attractions. The mills, the craftsmen, and the music are only the beginning. Bring your dancing shoes for the Friday evening hoe-down and don’t forget to stop by Mabry Mill – one of the most popular attractions along the parkway itself!

Safe Travels and Happy RVing!

Safe Pennsylvania RVing

Being in the thick of nature while RVing or camping, offers a wide array of benefits for the avid RVer. In addition to spending quality time with loved ones, being out in nature offers the chance to participate in activities in a less crowded area, or even offers the chance to do activities specific to nature. For example, snowboarding or skiing, atving, snowmobiling and hiking. However, being away from the crowded areas has its own set of cons. The biggest being the mere distance from medical care in the case of injury while RVing. Because of this, we’re filling you in on some basic injury prevention tips:

  1. Carry a first-aid kit and invest in basic first-aid training.
  2. Use the buddy system. If you plan on going for a long hike or ride, bring a friend!
  3. Carry a cell phone or two-way receiver whenever you’re away from your RV or campsite.
  4. If you are experiencing the ‘wilds’ on your own, let someone know where you will be and when they should expect you to return.
  5. Know your limits. While a healthy challenge can be a good thing, don’t get in over your head.
  6. Get familiar with the American Red Cross and Center for Disease Control websites. Both are great resources for preparedness.

We encourage you to have fun while RVing and camping, but always use common sense.

Pennsylvania does your RV stink?

Have you ever walked into a stale RV and wondered where the smell is coming from? Or are you trying to remove a smell in your RV after a long winter storage? The various smells and odors that form in RVs can be removed and taken care of. Here are 8 tips to removing bad odors from your RV.

1. Sewer Smell in the Bathroom
There are tons of chemicals that eliminate RV toilet odor on the market, each catering to the different ways your tank is dumped. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t help at all! Good ventilation for the black water tank is a must. The tank is vented out the roof of an RV. When traveling down the road, the wind can push wind down through that ventalation pipe, pushing the smell back into the RV instead of drawing out the odor. So…what do you do? You can install a special sewer vent that is designed to suck the odor out of the black tank with only a small breeze. See your local dealership to find out if they carry these special sewer vents.

2. Kitchen and Bathroom Drain Odors
When your trailer is not in use, water trapped in the P-traps under every sink and the shower can grow bacteria, spreading the smell throughout your RV. To keep the smell from forming, mix a cup of baking soda with a gallon of water. Pour the mixture down every drain and then dump what’s left into the kitchen sink so the mixture will go into the gray water tank too.

3. Rodent Odors in your RV
Dead rodents can be one of the worst smells in your RV. To remove the odor, find the dead rodent and remove it. Then scrub the area well, making sure to remove the odor and the bacteria/diseases that might have been left.

4. Bad Smelling Potable RV Water
When your water from your fresh water tank starts to smell or taste bad, it’s time to clean out the water system. The only way to get the fresh water tank system clean is to sanitize your RV water system with a diluted mixture of household bleach and water (make sure to rinse out the bleach mixture completely from your fresh water tank before use). If you keep having bad water issues in your fresh water tank system, consider installing a water filtration system.

5. Smelly RV Carpet and Pet Odors
The best way to remove smelly or pet stained carpets in your RV is to tear it out and replace it with laminate flooring. If you can’t afford to replace your carpet, another option is to get your carpet professionally cleaned. Invest in throw rugs to help keep your carpets clean and fresh as long as possible. You can also get your upholstery professionally cleaned, helping to eliminate any odors on your furniture too.

6. RV Refrigerator & Freezer Odors
To avoid a mildew or stale smell in your refrigerator and freezer, wipe down the inside with soap and water after every trip. Then leave the refrigerator and freezer doors left ajar to allow all moisture to evaporate. Leave either a shallow bowl or a box of baking soda in both the fridge and freezer will also help absorb any odors that may develop.

7. Stale RV Smells from Non-Use
If your RV has sat around for a while without regular use, a stale smell will start to appear. It’s usually smells, on top of smells, on top of smells! All in all…your RV needs to breath! Installing vent covers over the existing roof vents allows you to leave the roof vents open slightly, letting the hot stale air escape. Solar powered vents can also help you draw out the air more efficiently too. Removing the entire stale odor from your RV also involves doing steps 1 thru 6 and cleaning every surface in your RV. There are products on the market that claim they deodorized storage and mildew odors, but cleaning with regular household products work just as well.

8. Propane and Ammonia Odors
These two odors can mean big problems! If you start to smell a strong ammonia odor, the source will be the cooling unit of your refrigerator. The ammonia odor will be strong enough to bring tears to your eyes. There is really nothing you can do to fix it on your own. You’ll need to see the Service Department at your local Dealership, and be prepared for it to be expensive.

Propane odor can come from many areas and sources in and around your RV. Like the propane tanks, stove, oven, refrigerator, water heater, furnace, etc and the all lines that connect these appliances to the tanks as well. In order to detect a leak around the fittings, use a small brush and soapy water. Make sure to have adequate ventilation before you go looking for a propane problem. If you’re ever in doubt, call the Service Department at your local Central PA RV Dealership.
